Squadron Commander of the Women's Auxiliary Ferry Service (WAFS), Nancy Harkness Love proposed employing 28 well qualified women pilots for non-combat flying missions. In 1943, the WAFS merged with the Women's Flying Training Detachment (WFTD) to form the Women Airforce Service Pilots. Nancy was appointed Executive Commander.
