Harriet Quimby

Harriet Quimby was no wall flower! In 1910 she was thirty-five, a successful journalist, unmarried and fiercely independent. Harriet caught the flying bug while watching the Statue of Liberty Race in New York. She enrolled in a flying school owned by her friend's brother. To avoid public scrutiny and so that she could write about the experience in her magazine column, she disguised herself as a man and took her lessons at dawn. In 1911 she became the first American woman to earn a pilot's license, and was quoted as saying "Flying seems easier than voting". At a time when women were making little progress in the struggle for equal rights, her achievement was remarkable. She continued to defy convention when she rejected cumbersome petticoats for a purple satin jumpsuit of her own design. On April 16, 1912, she became the first woman to fly across the English Channel, unfortunately, coinciding with the sinking of the Titanic. She received almost no recognition from the press for her feat. Harriet shared her flying adventures with her readers in her own magazine column.
